8月3日，微软已经向MSDN和批量许可客户提供了最终版本的Microsoft Identity Manager 2016。

Microsoft Identity Manager 2016，也就是之前被称为Forefront Identity Manager的产品，旨在允许管理员将身份直接同步到云，同时支持采用了减缓身份信息的内部系统。微软在2014年11月以预览的方式提供了Microsoft Identity Manager 2016。

新发布的Identity Manager只能在线部署，它提供了可定制的密码管理、双因素认证、以及与微软Directory Service的Active Directory之间更深度的集成。

2012年，微软宣布将中止一系列Forefront产品，包括Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (FPE)、Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint (FPSP)、Forefront Security for Office Communications Server (FSOCS)、Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010 (TMG)以及Forefront Threat Management Gateway Web Protection Services (TMG WPS)。2013年，微软还中止了Forefront Unified Access Gateway。

微软在2012年交付了最新版本的Identity Manager，也就是Forefront Identity Manger 2010 R2。

Microsoft Identity Manager 2016是以每用户为基础收取许可费用的。每个身份受管理的用户都要求有一个客户访问许可。使用Microsoft Identity Manager 2016服务器软件作为Windows Server附加功能则要求拥有激活了Software Assurance的Windows Server许可。Microsoft Identity Manager 2016还包括在Azure Active Directory Premium中，后者是微软企业移动套件的一部分，该套件还包括Azure Active Directory Premium、Azure Rights Management、Intune以及Advanced Threat Analytics作为一个选项。
